This past Martin Luther King Jr. weekend, the SLC LOCAL crew headed down to Moe’s Valley for a weekend full of climbing, camaraderie, and sending hard problems.
Friday - Kick Off
Yusuke, Eric and Justin head down on Friday afternoon to meet up with Kevin and Meng at Man’s Work V10 at night. Right out the gate, Yusuke and Justin made quick work of the V10, sending it second go. Justin infamously dropped the flash at the slab top out after numbing out. This set the precedent and planted the idea of a Moe’s Valley Rampage.
Saturday - V Points, Big Sends & Bad Tactics
Saturday morning the whole gang: Thomas, Talbot, John, Yusuke, Eric, Justin, Kevin and Meng descended on Moe’s Valley once again to try and gather as many V points throughout the day. The group started their day on a couple V2’s - 4’s one of them being the Fridge V4. Justin then sent Show of Hands V10 while the rest of the crew sent Underachiever V8. Yusuke and Justin then sent Gravity Breach V7 right next to it. Yusuke then flashed Underwhelmed V6. The climbers around this area began making jokes about how only those wearing “Local” shirts were sending and flashing while those not were ground locked. The crew then migrated to the Pink Lady boulder where Justin used a campus beta to send Spectro V6 and Yusuke was doing one arms on the boulder. Meng went on to send the Goose V4 and work Ugly Duckling V6. The crew got around 150 to 200 V points by the end of the day as a collective. However the tactics were poor so the boys were insanely worked. Yusuke was the only smart one; resting, recovering and not throwing dumb attempts and messing around. Justin on the other hand was just throwing himself at the boulder for fun and spamming climbs left and right which left him pumped to the point where even after recovery he would be super pumped after two moves in. This would last the rest of the trip.

Sunday - Tactical Sends
Sunday, the day where mods would go down quick and the boys would climb smart. This day is when the group split up. The crew met at the Teepee boulders and warmed up on various V2’s-4s again racking a good point foundation. During this warm up sesh Yusuke sent Teepee Traverse V8 and Justin got the sit to it, Thermal Detonator V10. After this the group split. Yusuke and Justin stayed in the area to rack up climbs while the rest would go to work on Kevin’s project, Man’s Work. Yusuke sent Lidnder’s Roof V9 the two headed to Israil Direct V8 and made light work of it. They went back and Justin sent Helter Swelter V7 however again at the slab top out he got stuck for five minutes trying to figure out how to top out. The group reconvened at Ugly Duckling V6 where some homies sent. After this the crew split again where Justin, John and Yusuke went back to send Lidnder’s Roof and the rest worked on another V4/5. By the end of the day the total count ended at 310 points. The group decided that we should go for 400 points before we leave the next day.

Monday - Final Push & Mission Complete
Monday we planned on leaving by 4pm at the latest, however we had a late start and everyone dispersed throughout the day making plans very sporadic. After we warmed up at the entrance boulders, we headed to Paradise Lost V7. Yusuke and Justin Flashed it then ran over to the Monkey Boy area to get more points before the end of the day. Yusuke then sent Bazooka Tooth V8 while Kevin and Meng headed back to Man’s Work. The pair at Monkey Boy sent White Rabbit V7 while Eric was working Kung Pao V6. Unfortunately skin was too raw and body’s too achy for Dead Rabbit. The whole crew reconvened at Kung Pao where Eric, Justin and Yusuke sent. The group then rushed over to Tiger Moon V7 only needing a few more points to break 400. Yusuke, Justin and Kevin flashed it to send off the trip with a total of 400 Points!
Even though everyone’s body was in a lot of paint after, we came to the conclusion that doing this once a month would make us stronger and more well rounded climbers. Also just the ability to have fun on boulders and move on regardless of sending or not teaches us to not dwell on failures, but to learn from them. Also just being able to meet so many amazing people at the boulders was a win on its own.
